Elderly Drivers Who Voluntarily Return Their Licenses Receive a 100,000 Won Prepaid Transportation Card

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) implemented Seoul's first "Voluntary Surrender of Driver's Licenses by Elderly Drivers" project last year, and this year, all elderly individuals who voluntarily surrender their licenses will receive a prepaid transportation card worth 100,000 KRW.

As traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers' cognitive decline continue to be a social concern, according to statistics from the National Police Agency, the number of voluntary driver's license surrenders by Seoul residents aged 70 and older surged dramatically after the project was launched, increasing approximately 14 times from 1,236 in 2018 to 16,956 in 2019, showing high interest.

Accordingly, the district is continuing the voluntary driver's license surrender project this year, and in April, it was selected for the "Elderly Driver's License Voluntary Surrender Promotion Project" hosted by the National Police Agency, securing national subsidies.

Elderly drivers aged 65 or older interested in surrendering their driver's licenses can apply by visiting the Yangcheon Police Station or the Gangseo Driver's License Examination Office. After registration, they will receive a transportation card the following month. The district will notify applicants of the prepaid transportation card distribution date by phone, and the elderly can visit their local community service center to collect it upon receiving the call.

Last year, Yangcheon-gu was the first in Seoul to implement the prepaid transportation card distribution project for elderly drivers voluntarily surrendering their licenses, receiving high acclaim and distributing transportation cards worth 100,000 KRW to a total of 1,268 elderly individuals.

Mayor Kim Soo-young said, "We deeply appreciate the high interest and participation shown in the Yangcheon-gu voluntary driver's license surrender transportation card distribution project," adding, "Since we were selected for the elderly driver's license voluntary surrender promotion project, we will promote this project more actively and continue to do our best for the welfare of the elderly."
