[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 3rd that it will hold the "Korea Fisheries Grand Sale" event for one month from the 4th to June 3rd to revitalize seafood consumption, which has been depressed due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), and to support fishermen facing management difficulties.
Recently, seafood consumption has been shrinking as visits to major seafood consumption places such as restaurants and large supermarkets have decreased due to social distancing. Through this win-win discount event, the Ministry plans to help struggling fishermen and allow consumers to purchase nutritious seafood at low prices.
Participating companies and organizations will sell major farmed seafood such as flatfish, rockfish, sea squirts, abalone, and eel, as well as seasonal seafood, at up to 50% discounted prices during the event period.
Large supermarkets and department stores such as Lotte Mart, E-Mart, Homeplus, and Hyundai Department Store will sell rockfish, eel, abalone, etc., and public shopping channels and online malls such as Gongyoung Shopping, Lotte ON, 11st, Post Office Shopping, Gmarket, and Coupang will also sell flatfish, sea squirts, rockfish, etc. Seafood startup companies such as Samsam Seafood, Yam Table, Oneulhoe, and In-eo Gyoju Pirate Group will sell abalone, flounder, mullet, etc. on their respective websites, and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives will sell 18 types of seafood including dried yellow corvina and blue crabs on the Fisheries Cooperative Shopping site. Local governments such as Jeollanam-do, Chungcheongnam-do, and Tongyeong City will also sell local specialty seafood through regional markets, department stores, and shopping malls.
Um Ki-du, Director of Fisheries Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "We hope that the Korea Fisheries Grand Sale event will ease the worries of the fisheries industry struggling due to COVID-19 and provide an opportunity for the public to purchase fresh seafood at affordable prices." He added, "We express our gratitude to the seafood distribution and sales companies that participated in the win-win discount event."
Detailed event information by sales location for the Korea Fisheries Grand Sale can be found on the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries website starting from the 4th.
