[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 2nd (local time), the cumulative number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Russia surpassed 124,000, making it the seventh highest in the world.
As of that day, the countries with the highest number of COVID-19 confirmed cases are the United States, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, and Turkey, in that order.
On the 2nd, Russia's government COVID-19 task force for preventing the inflow and spread announced, "In the past 24 hours, 9,623 additional confirmed cases were reported in 83 regions including Moscow," adding, "The cumulative number of confirmed cases has increased to 124,054."
In the capital Moscow alone, 5,358 additional confirmed cases were reported, raising the cumulative infections to 62,658. Additionally, 807 new cases were reported in the Moscow region surrounding Moscow, 323 in the second-largest city Saint Petersburg, and 320 in the central Nizhny Novgorod region. Nationwide, the number of COVID-19 deaths increased by 57 in one day, reaching 1,222.
The government task force stated that so far, 15,013 of the confirmed cases have recovered, and the total number of tests conducted has increased to 3.9 million. The number of tests conducted per day reached 200,000.
Russia's COVID-19 confirmed cases are rapidly increasing as local health authorities conduct large-scale testing of up to 200,000 tests per day.
