[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ga-yeon] Lee Chan-ho (54), chairman of Changwon City Council, has been prosecuted for distributing personal information of confirmed COVID-19 patients in a family group chat.
The Changwon District Prosecutors' Office Criminal Division 1 (Chief Prosecutor Kwon Ki-dae) announced on the 28th that Lee was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Personal Information Protection Act.
Lee is accused of sharing personal information of confirmed COVID-19 patients in Changwon City on February 22 in a KakaoTalk group chat involving his family members.
At the time, it was investigated that Lee received a photographed copy of the confirmed case report prepared by the Changwon City Health Center through his secretary. The document was found to contain personal information such as the confirmed patient's real name, occupation, and address.
Subsequently, the photo was spread through SNS, blogs, and online cafes.
Meanwhile, the prosecution is investigating 12 COVID-19 related crimes involving a total of 19 people in the jurisdiction and plans to respond to various crimes exploiting the national disaster situation.
