Jeon Du-hwan to Appear Again in Gwangju Court After One Year

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Jeon Du-hwan will appear in the Gwangju court on the 27th as a defendant in a defamation case involving the deceased.

It has been over a year since he last appeared in court.

According to the Gwangju District Court, Jeon's trial will be held at 2 p.m. on the same day in Criminal Courtroom 201 of the Gwangju District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Kim Jeong-hoon of Criminal Division 8.

In criminal trials, the defendant is required to attend, and even if the court grants permission for absence, the defendant must attend the first trial date for identity verification and the sentencing date.

Jeon attended one trial last year for identity verification but has since submitted absence notices citing health reasons and did not appear.

This time, his attendance was scheduled following the renewal of trial procedures due to a change in the presiding judge.

Meanwhile, Jeon was indicted on charges of defaming the late Father Jo Bi-o by claiming in his 2017 memoir that Father Jo’s testimony witnessing helicopter gunfire was false, and criticizing him as “a shameless liar unworthy of being called a clergyman.”
