[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Ssangmun Station on Subway Line 4 in Dobong-gu (Mayor Lee Dong-jin) will be transformed into a cultural and artistic station.

To this end, the district will begin the "Station Environment Improvement and Comprehensive Remodeling Construction for Cultural and Artistic Upgrades" at Ssangmun Station in May.

Ssangmun Station is an aging station that has been in operation for 33 years. Despite having an average daily ridership of about 62,000 passengers, the station lacked convenience facilities such as elevators for the mobility-impaired and resting areas for residents.

Accordingly, the district will invest approximately 40 billion KRW from city funds to replace the cooling and aging facilities entirely and start remodeling construction to create a cultural and artistic railway environment.

In particular, the district plans to create a diverse space based on cultural, artistic, and historical programs by fostering a cultural and artistic environment at Ssangmun Station, combining Dooly content to develop a distinctive and sustainable space.

Moreover, the district will install two new escalators at Exit 3 of Ssangmun Station.

Exit 3 of Ssangmun Station is the main entrance for bus transfer passengers and has a high foot traffic volume but currently lacks escalators. It only has stairs, making it difficult for residents with heavy luggage or mobility issues to use. To improve this, the district secured 4 billion KRW from the Seoul city budget and began escalator installation construction in March. The construction is scheduled to be completed by December 2021.

Along with this, the district will also install transfer elevators between Line 1 and Line 4 at Changdong Station. The platform width at Changdong Station will be expanded to install two transfer elevators. Construction will start in May and is expected to be completed by December 2021.

Escalators will also be newly installed in the east-west passageway at Changdong Station. To facilitate easier movement for the elderly and mobility-impaired passengers using Changdong Station, two escalators will be installed on both the east and west sides of the stair passageway, totaling four escalators. Construction began in March and is scheduled for completion in December 2021.

With this, by the end of 2021, all subway stations in Dobong-gu will be equipped with mobility convenience facilities, including seven elevators at Banghak and Dobong Stations opened in February, escalators at Ssangmun and Changdong Stations started in March, and transfer elevators at Changdong Station planned to start in May.

In addition, the district is actively consulting with related organizations to promptly improve aging stations and convenience for subway users. It plans to actively coordinate with Seoul Metro, Korea Railroad Corporation, and other related agencies to promote projects such as the new construction of Banghak Station on Line 1 scheduled to start this year and the Ui-Banghak light rail project to enhance resident convenience.

Lee Dong-jin, Mayor of Dobong-gu, stated, “Through this improvement project that creates a cultural and artistic environment and incorporates the Dooly theme, we expect Ssangmun Station to be reborn as a distinctive cultural and artistic station. We will actively support improvements in mobility convenience facilities so that residents can use the subway more safely and comfortably.”
