[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Apple is discontinuing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus with the launch of the iPhone SE 2nd generation.

On the 15th (local time), Apple announced that it will stop selling the iPhone 8 series as it launches the iPhone SE 2nd generation. The iPhone 8 series will only be available at authorized reseller stores with remaining stock.

The iPhone SE 2nd generation has the same specifications as the iPhone 8. It features a 4.7-inch display, a home button, and Touch ID functionality, with identical camera specs, device size, and weight. Apple employs a strategy of quickly discontinuing models that have similar specifications to its latest products.

The iPhone SE 2nd generation is equipped with the improved A13 Bionic chip compared to its predecessor, and upgrades include wireless charging, fast charging, and enhanced camera features. The price is also much lower than the iPhone 8. The iPhone 8 (64GB), released in the second half of 2017, was priced at 946,000 KRW, whereas the iPhone SE 2nd generation starts at 550,000 KRW.

Contrary to rumors that a 5.5-inch iPhone SE Plus model would be released simultaneously, the Plus model did not appear. Although iOS 14 code suggests plans for an iPhone SE Plus version, it is unclear whether Apple will release the iPhone SE Plus model in the future.

Meanwhile, Apple will begin accepting pre-orders in the United States from the 17th and start selling the iPhone SE 2nd generation from the 24th. It will be available in three colors: White, Black, and Red. The domestic prices are ▲64GB model 550,000 KRW ▲128GB model 620,000 KRW ▲256GB model 760,000 KRW. The domestic release schedule is undecided but is expected to be after May.
