Naver "Overseas Comment Contribution Minimal"... Refuting Public Opinion Manipulation Allegations

[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] Naver announced on the 14th that the proportion of comments suspected to be written overseas or manipulated by Chinese internet opinion, which has recently been raised mainly in some online communities, is minimal.

Naver stated, "Looking at the daily disclosed news comment statistics, the proportion of comments written from overseas is very low."

According to Naver Datalab, as of the 13th, out of 449,816 comments posted on Naver, 97.4% were written domestically. The overseas proportion was 2.6%, including 0.56% from the United States, 0.41% from China, and 0.29% from Japan.

Naver also holds the position that the rate of users disguising their access location overseas by routing through domestic servers is extremely low.

Naver explained, "Even after additional internal analysis, cases where IP addresses were bypassed using proxies or virtual private networks (VPNs) to make it difficult to identify the writer's location when writing comments are minimal."

Meanwhile, Naver stated that according to the Public Official Election Act, users who have not verified their identity cannot post comments during the general election period, and that this measure will be maintained even after the election.

The identity verification system is a procedure to confirm that the ID user is the person themselves, and unlike the real-name system where the writer's name is exposed, anonymity is guaranteed.

Naver said, "Currently, more than 96% of news comment writers use IDs that have undergone identity verification," adding, "Even if the verification process for unverified IDs is maintained for some time after the election, the impact will not be significant."
