'Doosan Humanities Theater 2020: Food' First Work... May 6-23 at Doosan Art Center Space111
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The first production of 'Doosan Humanities Theater 2020: Food,' the play 'One-Person Table,' will be staged at Doosan Art Center Space111 from May 6 to 23.
'One-Person Table' is an adaptation of Yoon Go-eun's short story of the same name. When the original story was published in 2010, it attracted attention for its ingenious concept of an academy that teaches 'eating alone,' which was then an unfamiliar idea. Although 'eating alone' has become a common dining culture in 2020, ten years after the original was published, the perspective that views solitary meals as unusual still remains.
'One-Person Table' asks whether dining alone and dining together can coexist equally at the table. It questions whether true coexistence is not only about many people sharing one table but also respecting and acknowledging the countless individual tables as they are.
In-yong, who has been working for nine months and just shed the label of a new employee, is ostracized at work for no reason. Although he tries to get close to people, no one wants to eat with In-yong. Feeling discouraged, In-yong reluctantly eats alone every day and eventually enrolls in an academy that teaches 'how to eat alone.' While he can eat jajangmyeon, pasta, and Korean set meals alone, grilling meat alone at a barbecue restaurant is too difficult. At that moment, a master of eating alone appears before In-yong.
Playwright Lee Oh-jin adapted the work. Lee Oh-jin won the Daesan College Literature Award in the playwriting category in 2009 and has consistently written stories about women and youth since her debut.
The direction is by Lee Ki-ppeum, who has excelled across genres including theater and musicals. Director Lee plans to present a stage that captures the unique dynamism and rhythm inspired by boxing movements.
Doosan Humanities Theater is a program that explores questions and themes worth considering in our shared lives today from various perspectives through diverse artistic activities such as plays, exhibitions, and lectures. It began in 2013 and is now in its eighth year. Over the years, it has created opportunities to ponder fundamental questions about current social phenomena under different themes each year, including Big History: From the Big Bang to Big Data, The Age of Distrust, Exceptions, Adventure, Conflict, Altruists, and Apartments.
This year, under the theme 'Food,' eight lectures featuring speakers from sociology, humanities, and science, as well as three performances, will be held from May to July.
Tickets for the play 'One-Person Table' can be purchased on the Doosan Art Center website and Interpark Ticket.
