Gwangju Dong-gu Designates and Operates 'One Institution, One Clean Zone' Program

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 13th that as part of the ‘2020 Making Dong-gu Trash-Free’ initiative, it will create environmentally friendly streets free of trash through the designation and operation of ‘One Institution, One Clean Zone.’

First, through an agreement between the district office, Namgwangju Market Merchants Association, and Gwangju Jeonnam Regional Military Manpower Administration, the streets around Namgwangju Market will be transformed into trash-free zones.

The sidewalks along Cheonbyeonwoo-ro near Namgwangju Market and in front of the Military Manpower Administration were suffering from illegally dumped trash such as styrofoam, discarded pallets, and food waste, despite not being designated trash disposal areas.

Accordingly, through the agreement with the Merchants Association and the Military Manpower Administration, various illegal dumping prevention activities are being implemented, including ▲establishing a joint monitoring system ▲promoting proper trash disposal methods ▲introducing a recycling collection point system ▲installing food waste reduction facilities ▲creating flower beds in habitual illegal dumping areas, gradually transforming the sidewalks and roads into cleaner spaces.

Additionally, an MOU was signed with the ‘Dongmyeong Community Coexistence Council’ of the Dongmyeong-dong caf? street to designate the Dongridan-gil caf? street area as a clean zone and work on maintaining tidy alleys.

The two organizations plan to create a clean caf? street through ▲a campaign to maintain the clean sections of Dongridan-gil alleys ▲a daily 10-minute sweeping campaign in front of homes and stores ▲management of illegal trash dumping sites and linking with the Four Seasons Flowering Urban Garden Project ▲designating exemplary clean-keeper stores among Dongmyeong-dong shopping district tenants.

In the future, Dong-gu plans to continuously expand agreements with various institutions and organizations within the district, such as schools, financial institutions, and cooperatives.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “We will expand the designation of ‘One Institution, One Clean Zone’ and jointly create a clean neighborhood throughout Dong-gu through public-private cooperation,” adding, “We will realize a trash-free and pleasant Dong-gu through residents’ awareness improvement and various policies.”
