[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Hee-eun Park] A man in his 30s, identified as A, who was crossing a crosswalk riding the shared electric scooter 'Lime,' collided with a vehicle and died. This is the first fatal accident involving a shared electric scooter in Busan.
At around 12:15 a.m. on the 12th, Mr. A was crossing a one-way 4-lane crosswalk in front of the old Sponge in U-dong, Haeundae-gu, Busan, when he collided with a vehicle driven by Mr. B, who is in his 20s. Mr. A was seriously injured and transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away.
The impact of the accident caused the scooter's wheels and handlebars to completely detach.
It was raining at the time of the accident, reducing driving visibility, and it was reported that the scooter rider was not equipped with safety gear such as a helmet.
A police official stated, "At the time of the accident, the electric scooter was jaywalking against the stop signal, and it is believed that the vehicle involved was traveling at a speed exceeding the speed limit of 50 km/h. We are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident."
Meanwhile, the shared service electric scooter 'Lime' has been operating mainly around Haeundae since last year.
