[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] In the United States, 6.61 million people filed for unemployment benefits within a week, indicating a continued surge in unemployment due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

The U.S. Department of Labor announced on the 9th (local time) that new unemployment claims for the week of March 29 to April 4 reached approximately 6.61 million. This signifies a reduction in available jobs.

According to Bloomberg News, 16.8 million people have lost their jobs in the U.S. over the past three weeks.

New unemployment claims in the U.S. were 3.3 million in the third week of March and 6.87 million in the fourth week.

The U.S. Department of Labor revised the new unemployment claims for the fourth week of March upward from an initial 6.65 million to 6.87 million.

Although the number of unemployment claims slightly decreased compared to the previous week, the three consecutive weeks of sharp increases suggest that the U.S. economy is worsening further.
