[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Jeonnam Provincial Council’s Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident Special Committee (Chairperson Kang Jeonghee) and the Yeosun Incident Bereaved Families Association announced on the 9th that they requested candidates for the National Assembly from the Jeonnam region on the 8th to enact the “Special Act on the Investigation and Restoration of Honor for the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident” (hereinafter referred to as the Special Act) upon the inauguration of the 21st National Assembly.
The Special Committee and the Bereaved Families Association delivered a petition to candidates in the province, asking them to sign a pledge to prioritize the enactment of the Special Act as a core task immediately upon being elected as members of the 21st National Assembly.
Although several members of the National Assembly have been striving to enact the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident Special Act for the past 20 years, progress has stalled as the term of the 20th National Assembly comes to an end.
Chairperson Kang Jeonghee emphasized, “Due to deeply rooted anti-communist ideology, even after 72 years since the incident occurred, victims of the Yeosun Incident have not been able to restore their honor and have passed away unfairly.”
She continued, “Before it is too late, it is the duty of the state for the National Assembly to promptly enact the Special Act on the Investigation and Restoration of Honor for the Yeosun Incident to restore the honor of the civilians who were unfairly sacrificed.”
Chairperson Kang also added, “We will strive to correct distorted history, resolve the grievances of the unfairly sacrificed victims, and soothe the pain of the residents.”
