[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The Future United Party criticized Presidential Secretary No Young-min for posting on his social network service (SNS) homepage comparing the number of deaths and confirmed cases of COVID-19 per one million population with other countries, saying "we are responding well," calling it "ranking play in the face of tragic deaths."
Jung Yeon-guk, the senior spokesperson of the Future United Party's election committee, pointed out in a statement on the 9th, "This is an unprecedentedly outrageous remark that forgets both shame and the minimum respect for the deceased."
Spokesperson Jung said, "What kind of ranking play is this in the face of tragic deaths? Would this have been possible if it were Secretary No's own family?" He added, "The number of confirmed cases has exceeded 10,000, and the number of deaths is over 200. Among countries near China, South Korea has the highest number of deaths."
He stated, "If the government had only done well in initial quarantine measures and listened to experts' opinions to block external inflows, we could have avoided losing over 200 precious lives," and criticized, "The government and ruling party may want to turn a blind eye, but this is the fact as it is, and the public sentiment."
Spokesperson Jung also criticized, "The Taiwanese Minister of Health and Welfare apologized tearfully to the public as soon as the first death occurred, but officials of the South Korean government and ruling party, despite over 200 deaths, have been busy with self-praise and building government achievements instead of offering proper condolences," and asked, "Is even the death of the people just a matter of factional logic and an election tool?"
