[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] Lee Ok-cheol, a member of the Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Assembly (Goseong 1), who was prosecuted for violating the Public Official Election Act, received a sentence invalidating his election in the appellate court as well.
The Criminal Division 1 of the Changwon Branch of the Busan High Court (Chief Judge Kim Jin-seok) upheld the original sentence of a 2 million won fine in the appeal trial on the 8th against Assemblyman Lee, who was charged with disseminating false information (violation of the Public Official Election Act).
The court dismissed both Lee’s and the prosecution’s appeals, stating there was no legal error in the first trial’s judgment and that the sentencing was neither too harsh nor too lenient.
Assemblyman Lee was indicted without detention on charges of including false information related to his criminal record in the election publicity materials for the local elections in June 2018.
Elected officials lose their position if they are sentenced to a fine of 1 million won or more for violating the Public Official Election Act.
