Hanwha Construction, Evolution of Safety Management Technology... From Drones and Mobile Apps to VR

Daegu Outer Ring Expressway Site Introduces Drones and VR, Iraq New City Uses BIM Design
Adopting Idea Technologies Tailored to Each Construction Site

Hanwha Construction, Evolution of Safety Management Technology... From Drones and Mobile Apps to VR

Hanwha Construction (CEO Choi Kwang-ho) is leading a transformation in safety management culture by introducing various new technologies in safety management. While applying idea technologies tailored to the characteristics of each construction site, highly effective technologies are adopted company-wide, enhancing safety synergy through the fusion of safety and technology.

A representative site is the Daegu Outer Ring Expressway Section 1 construction site, a project to build a total of 5.11 km of highway including the Kumho Bridge. To effectively manage safety across the wide project area, drones have been introduced at this site. In particular, for the narrow bridge upper structure work where it is difficult for anyone other than workers to access, drones are deployed to conduct safety inspections, discovering safety solutions suited to the site’s characteristics.

Additionally, to prevent fall accident risks, VR (Virtual Reality) devices are used during new and regular worker training to simulate dangerous situations, allowing workers to directly experience the importance of safety. This enables indirect experience of practice once, which is more effective than a hundred words.

At the Iraq Bismayah New City construction site and Janggyo-dong Hanwha Building remodeling site, BIM (Building Information Modeling) design technology has been applied. This technology allows three-dimensional (3D) confirmation of the building construction process from the design stage and contains various information such as attributes of building components, process order, and quantity calculation, greatly enhancing understanding of the building. Through this, design errors can be corrected, construction mistakes minimized, and potential risks identified in advance for proactive response.

‘HS2E (Hanwha Safety Eagle Eye)’, a mobile safety management app system developed in-house by Hanwha Construction, is used by all employees and partner company staff at every Hanwha Construction site. Whenever there is a need for improvement or preventive measures related to the safety environment at the construction site, anyone can immediately take a photo with their phone and enter details, which are then disseminated in real time to all site employees and partner company staff.

The processed accident prevention measures accumulate as data, and the analysis results are used to establish smart safety measures. For example, focused management is conducted on the most frequently registered accident types (such as falls and overturns) during accident prevention activities, or safety activities by each business division are measured for performance and used as evaluation indicators. The system also includes functions to spread accident prevention messages to all site employees via phone push notifications and text messages.

A Hanwha Construction official said, “The application of new technologies is increasing in the field of safety management at construction sites in line with changes in the times,” adding, “Hanwha Construction encourages the introduction of various safety management ideas tailored to the characteristics of each construction site.”
