Dongdaemun-gu, Establishment of Animal Protection Team

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) is accelerating efforts to create a city where people and animals coexist in the era of 10 million companion animals.

In line with the growing importance of protecting companion animals who share daily life, the district established an 'Animal Protection Team' within the Economic Promotion Division last month. This is to appropriately respond to the continuously increasing need for animal protection.

Accordingly, centered on the Animal Protection Team, the district plans to accelerate the construction of a "city where people and animals live harmoniously" through various policies and programs.

Recently, the district revised the 'Animal Protection Ordinance' and formed a consultative body to protect stray cats within the redevelopment zones. At six local parks, including Baebongsan Neighborhood Park, 'companion animal waste bag dispensers' were installed to allow pet owners who forgot to bring waste bags to conveniently use them.

At about 20 locations such as Jang-an Cherry Blossom Path along Jungnangcheon Stream and Sports Park, 'Animal Protection Act Notices' have been posted to encourage a mature companion animal culture among residents.

Earlier, the district appointed six honorary animal protection monitors last year. These monitors provide consultation services related to animal protection and welfare, guide etiquette that companion animals and owners must observe in public places, and conduct campaigns to prevent animal abuse.

Additionally, the 'Companion Dog Academy' is held twice a year. Inviting professional instructors, participants are educated on △understanding companion dogs' gestures and vocalizations △socialization and behavioral enrichment △etiquette training △behavior correction and walking methods.

Having installed 25 feeding stations and winter shelters for stray cats last year, Dongdaemun-gu plans to install additional feeding stations and winter shelters based on residents' applications.

Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "We established a dedicated animal protection team to foster a mature companion animal culture through various policies," and added, "We will create a 'city where people and animals live harmoniously' through diverse policies and programs."
