Decision to Share COVID-19 Burdens: Delivery Ceremony Held on the Morning of the 8th at Good Neighbors Hall... Kits Containing Masks, Hand Sanitizers, and Daily Necessities to Be Provided to Children in Low-Income Crisis Families

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Cha Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, will donate 30% of his salary from March to June, a period of four months, to Good Neighbors to share the pain caused by the spread of COVID-19.

Due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation, economic activities have been restricted, and not only self-employed and small business owners but all citizens are going through difficult times.

Following the decision by the President and high-ranking officials such as ministers and vice ministers to return 30% of their salaries for four months, the Seoul Metropolitan Council of District Mayors also agreed in March that the mayors of the 25 autonomous districts in Seoul would join the salary return campaign.

Mayor Cha Hyun-il of Yeongdeungpo District is also participating in this nationwide relay of good deeds by returning 30% of his salary from March to June and donating it to Good Neighbors as a designated contribution.

On the morning of the 8th, Mayor Cha visited the Good Neighbors headquarters (13 Beodnaru-ro) to hold a donation ceremony and spoke with Kim Jung-gon, Secretary General of Good Neighbors, requesting that the funds be used to support local children who are psychologically and economically struggling due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Good Neighbors plans to create kits containing masks, hand sanitizers, and daily necessities based on Mayor Cha’s intention and provide them to children from low-income crisis families.

Good Neighbors is Korea’s leading international relief and development NGO (non-governmental organization) that prioritizes children’s rights and leads various child welfare projects and international relief and development initiatives.

Mayor Cha Hyun-il of Yeongdeungpo District said, “I joined the salary return campaign to share the pain of the residents who are suffering due to COVID-19,” adding, “I hope my small sharing will give hope and courage to the residents and contribute even a little to overcoming this crisis.”
