[Gwangju=Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, appealed on the 8th, "If the Democratic Party does not become the first party, the Future United Party will take away the Speaker of the National Assembly, and the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (PCC) and prosecution reform will all be in vain," urging, "Please make sure to vote for the Citizen Party, symbol number 5, in the third slot of the proportional representation ballot."

At a joint election countermeasure committee meeting held with the Citizen Party at the Gwangju City Party office that day, Lee said, "In this general election, since there are no proportional representation candidates from the Democratic Party, it is very important to increase the proportional vote rate for the Citizen Party."

Lee emphasized, "For the Democratic Party to become the first party, many people must participate from the early voting stage," adding, "Since you have to line up for the main vote, please practice social distancing and vote early as much as possible."

Targeting the Open Democratic Party, Lee said, "The mixed-member proportional representation system is a law to foster small parties, but after the law passed, so-called 'celebrities' have appeared and formed parties to be active," criticizing, "They are not political minorities. If they occupy seats, minorities will lose their places."

Lee stated, "The Moon Jae-in government flies with two wings: the Democratic Party in the constituencies and the Citizen Party in proportional representation. With these two wings, the Moon Jae-in government will fly to complete reform tasks and build a foundation for regime re-creation." He added, "Our party is laying a good foundation to complete reform tasks by securing a majority alone," and said, "If that happens, the 21st National Assembly will be able to achieve the reform tasks demanded by the people more smoothly."

Regarding some independent candidates' pledges to join the Democratic Party, Lee said, "Having led the party for a year and a half, I decided to reform the wrong political culture and practices," and declared a no-readmission policy, saying, "Although there were many requests for re-entry, I did not allow a single one." In his closing remarks, Lee said, "After this election, those who left the party will not return to our party. I say this clearly," and added, "We must eradicate such wrong political practices this time."

Woo Hee-jong, co-chairman of the Citizen Party's standing joint election countermeasure committee, said, "This general election must be won perfectly and overwhelmingly. The victory of the Citizen Party is essential for the ruling party to win," adding, "Only if the Citizen Party wins can we overcome the economic crisis caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and expose the rotten core of the political prosecution that threatens the Moon Jae-in government and obstructs reform."

Woo said, "Did the People's Party, which broke away from the Democratic Party in the 20th National Assembly, help the Moon Jae-in government? On the contrary, it joined hands with conservative corrupt forces and hindered the reform drive," and added, "The future of the Open Democratic Party will not be much different from that of the People's Party. We must avoid such a situation at all costs."
