"Decision on Introducing Electronic Wristbands to Be Made Soon After Gathering Public Opinion"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on the 8th, "We will temporarily suspend visa exemptions and visa-free entry for countries that prohibit our citizens from entering, and expand restrictions on foreign entry for non-essential purposes."
On the same day, Prime Minister Chung held a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDSCH) for COVID-19 response at the Government Complex Sejong and stated, "While maintaining the foundation of openness, we will strengthen restrictions on (foreign entry) based on the principle of reciprocity."
Prime Minister Chung emphasized, "It is also problematic that the pandemic sweeping Europe and the United States shows signs of spreading to Asian countries such as Japan," and added, "We will discuss more proactive measures to respond to the risk of overseas inflow."
He also urged, "Relevant ministries should promptly prepare and implement measures based on the discussion results."
Prime Minister Chung mentioned, "We have gradually strengthened entry restrictions as the global pandemic spreads," and "Since April 1, mandatory quarantine has been implemented for all entrants."
He continued, "Although most are our citizens such as international students, it is true that more than 5,000 people enter daily, which is a burden," and explained, "Recently, nearly half of the new confirmed cases are from overseas inflow."
Furthermore, he said, "There should be no crowding of students at academies or busy clubs," and instructed, "For clubs and other entertainment bars, not only should compliance with administrative orders be monitored, but strong measures such as assembly bans should be taken against businesses violating guidelines."
In particular, he stated, "Cases of self-quarantine violations detected so far should be promptly reported, and management should be strengthened by expanding surprise inspections," and added, "Regarding the introduction of electronic wristbands, we will gather public opinion and reach a conclusion soon."
