[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daeseop] The Korea Event Industry Cooperative announced on the 8th that six organizations related to the event industry, including the Korea Event Association, held an 'Emergency Countermeasure Meeting for the Novel Coronavirus Infection (COVID-19)'.
The emergency countermeasure meeting for the event industry regarding COVID-19 was held the previous day at the Small and Medium Business DMC Tower in Sangam-dong, Seoul. About 50 representatives from six organizations, representing various industries, fields, and regions, gathered to collect opinions on the damage status and support conditions of 1,500 member companies and to discuss countermeasures.
The attendees agreed that they are facing a crisis of bankruptcy due to a sharp decline in sales caused by the spread of COVID-19 and that it is necessary to designate the event agency industry as a crisis industry. According to the Event Industry Cooperative, the number of events canceled by the event agency industry in the first half of this year due to COVID-19 reached about 10,000. The cooperative explained that when converted into monetary value, this exceeds 1.3 trillion won.
During the emergency countermeasure meeting, the 'Emergency Countermeasure Committee for Korean Event Agency-related Organizations (tentative name)' was also formed. Eom Sang-yong, chairman of the Korea Event Industry Cooperative, will serve as the inaugural chairman.
A representative of the Emergency Countermeasure Committee said, "All industries are facing difficulties in this unprecedented situation with an unknown end date, but event industry workers are enduring day by day with proposal work whose feasibility is uncertain, without receiving proper compensation. Therefore, proactive government support for these workers is urgently needed."
