Specialized Design for Public Housing 'Korea Public Housing Design Competition Daejeon'

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The '2020 Korea Public Housing Design Competition Exhibition' to promote 19 apartment housing projects and 1 multi-family housing project nationwide will be held in June.

Now in its third edition, this design competition exhibition involves five local public enterprises including LH, SH, Gyeonggi, Daegu, Ulsan Urban Corporations, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporations.

The number of projects for the competition has nearly doubled compared to last year, expanding to 20 projects including 19 apartment housing projects such as newlywed hope housing, long-term lease, and happy housing, as well as 1 multi-family housing project.

In the metropolitan area, there are a total of 8 sites: Korea Educational Development Institute site, Seongnam Geumto, Siheung Hajung, Bucheon Comprehensive Station Area, Dasan Jigeum, Siheung Geomo, Siheung Hajung, and Incheon Ganseok. Outside the metropolitan area, there are 12 sites including Taebaek Jangseong, Cheongju Naedeok, Jeongeup Yeonji, Ulsan Taehwagang Riverside, Ulsan Yuldong, Bonghwa Chunyang, Daegu Yeonho, Daegu Grand Park (1, 2, 3, 4), and Jeju Hallim.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to form an operating committee this month with participating institutions and related academic and professional associations. Then, by May, they plan to decide on detailed matters necessary for the competition such as competition themes, judging criteria, and design guidelines.

The competition method will also be diversified into separate competitions and integrated competitions in addition to the general competition. To overcome the limitation of participation mainly by medium and large companies under the single general competition method, creative new and small architects will be able to participate by separating the planning design only without the burden of basic and detailed design.

After announcing the competition at the end of June, submissions will be accepted until September, and in October, winning works for each district will be selected reflecting expert and public judging results. Through exhibitions of the winning works, a final excellent work (within 5) will be selected by public voting and awarded in November.

Kim Gyu-cheol, Director of the Public Housing Promotion Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, “This year’s competition exhibition saw active participation from many local public enterprises based on a consensus that change and design innovation in public housing are necessary. We will strive to spread the effects of the design competition nationwide through continuous collaboration with local public enterprises and to provide residential service benefits in various regions.”
