[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Convenience store Seven Eleven launched a series of ready-to-eat meals using black foods on the 7th, ahead of Black Day on April 14.
Seven Eleven targeted Black Day, a commemorative day for singles, by introducing a ready-to-eat meal series that considers both taste and health using black foods such as black sesame and squid ink. The black food series includes four items: ‘Black Chicken Dosirak (4,700 KRW)’, ‘Black Hot Sausage Triangle Kimbap (1,200 KRW)’, ‘Black Frank Cheese Kimbap (2,600 KRW)’, and ‘Black Hot Dog (2,800 KRW)’.
First, the Black Chicken Dosirak features savory and crispy chicken coated with sweet black sesame sauce as the main dish, accompanied by squid ink fried rice, squid ink spaghetti, and black sausage vegetable stir-fry. Even the pickled radish is colored black using squid ink. The Black Hot Sausage Triangle Kimbap is topped with squid ink sausage seasoned with spicy budae-jjigae sauce inside savory vegetable fried rice mixed with squid ink. The Black Frank Cheese Kimbap contains a whole black frank sausage along with various vegetables and plenty of rich shredded cheese. The Black Hot Dog is completed by putting black sausage, cheese, pickles, and onions inside a squid ink bun hot dog, drizzled with mustard and ketchup sauces.
To commemorate the launch of the black food series, Seven Eleven is holding a ‘My Own Black Item’ event on social networking services (SNS) until the 14th. On Facebook, participants can capture their favorite black item from the Black Day video uploaded on Seven Eleven’s official SNS and leave a comment. Winners will be selected by lottery to receive a Carhartt Trade Series Black Backpack (1 person), a box of Jjapagetti large bowls (3 people), or a Seven Eleven mobile gift certificate worth 5,000 KRW (10 people).
Additionally, on Instagram, participants can upload a verification photo with a black-colored item they own and at least one of the 11 Seven Eleven Black Day products purchased, along with the designated hashtags. Winners will later be drawn to receive a Chanel lipstick (1 person), a box of Jjapagetti large bowls (3 people), or a Seven Eleven mobile gift certificate worth 5,000 KRW (10 people).
Kim Hayoung, MD (Merchandiser) of the Seven Eleven Food Team, said, “This black food ready-to-eat meal series adds not only taste but also visual enjoyment with its pitch-black appearance,” and added, “Since black-colored foods have recently become popular among young people as Instagrammable foods, we expect a good response as a unique food item.”
