[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] The daily number of new COVID-19 cases in Russia has approached the 1,000 mark. The number of regions with confirmed cases has expanded to 80 out of the total 85 federal subjects (local governments).

According to TASS news agency and others, Russia's COVID-19 task force announced on the 6th (local time) that "954 new confirmed cases were reported in 49 regions, including Moscow, over the past day," and "the total cumulative confirmed cases have increased to 6,343 (in 80 regions)."

In the capital city Moscow alone, 591 new confirmed cases were reported, raising the total number of infections to 4,484. The Moscow city task force stated that "about 85% of patients in the area are under 65 years old." Additionally, 82 new cases were reported in the Moscow region near Moscow, 35 in Saint Petersburg, and 31 in the Komi Republic in the northwest.

The death toll from COVID-19 also increased by 2, bringing the total to 47.

The upward trend in confirmed cases in Russia is rapidly accelerating due to a significant increase in daily diagnostic testing, and infections are emerging among returnees from foreign visits and those who have come into contact with existing patients.

In response to the spread of COVID-19, Russia has implemented stringent quarantine measures. After closing all borders, international flights have been limited to special flights transporting Russian nationals staying abroad, but even these have now been suspended.
