Gwangju Dong-gu Selected for 'Care Community Support Project'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 6th that it has been selected for the ‘Care Community Support Project’ organized by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

This project, launched for the first time this year, aims to complement the limitations of public care supply and create a care-friendly culture in the community by supporting care communities led by residents based on shared childcare centers and women-friendly cities.

Dong-gu applied in the form of a consortium with three communities centered on the Dong-gu Healthy Family Multicultural Family Support Center: the mutual aid type Yongsan District shared childcare center ‘Dahamkke Kiwoom’, and the community types ‘Dong-gu & Donga‘s’ and ‘Jieum & Jieum’, receiving 45 million KRW in care activity funds from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

‘Dahamkke Kiwoom’ operates a twice-weekly apartment care mutual aid community, while ‘Dong-gu & Donga‘s’ runs programs such as ‘Asian Home-cooked Meals Mom’s Recipe’ and ‘Learning Asian Culture’ with children from general and multicultural families attending the same elementary school.

Additionally, ‘Jieum & Jieum’ integrates general and facility children under 12 years old to provide niche care tailored to each community’s characteristics, including environmental awareness upcycling craft experiences, traditional play education, and snack booth operations for children using the swimming pool.

Furthermore, the Dong-gu Healthy Family Multicultural Family Support Center will operate ▲ training of professional personnel (coordinators) to support network communities ▲ quarterly network village events ▲ themed Dahamkke Kiwoom days to strengthen the capacity of care communities and spread the atmosphere.

With the selection for this care support project, Dong-gu plans to discover and nurture various types of care communities to reduce parents’ childcare burdens and create a care-friendly village environment where the local community voluntarily takes responsibility for child care.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “I am pleased to be selected for the project to discover and support various care communities where the village cares for children together,” adding, “Through care communities, many children will be able to receive warm care from our society nearby.”
