One Hyundai Motor Alabama Plant Employee Dies from COVID-19

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 6th that one employee working at its Alabama plant in the United States has died from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).


The Hyundai Alabama plant suspended operations starting from the 18th of last month after an employee tested positive for COVID-19. Hyundai stated that due to privacy concerns, they cannot confirm whether the deceased employee was the one who had tested positive at that time.


The Hyundai Alabama plant employs approximately 3,000 workers, with last year's production volume around 335,500 units. Operations were halted on the 18th of last month, and production is planned to resume on the 13th of this month. However, there remains a possibility of further extension of the shutdown depending on the trend of COVID-19 spread.


According to Johns Hopkins University in the United States, as of 2:30 PM local time on the 5th, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. was 325,185, with 9,180 deaths reported.
