Gwangju Buk-gu Implements 'Resident Life Safety Insurance'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Moon In) announced on the 6th that it is implementing the ‘Resident Life Safety Insurance,’ fully funded by the district, to support residents affected by various disasters or accidents.

The Resident Life Safety Insurance is a system that pays insurance benefits when residents experience unexpected accidents in daily life. Buk-gu was the first autonomous district in Gwangju to enact an ordinance related to life safety insurance in 2018 and has been implementing it since last year.

The coverage targets residents registered in Buk-gu (including registered foreigners), and enrollment or withdrawal is processed automatically without separate procedures upon moving in or out.

This year’s coverage includes compensation and medical expenses for five categories: ▲ explosion, fire, collapse, landslide accidents ▲ water play accidents ▲ gas accidents ▲ heat-related illness diagnosis benefits ▲ burn surgery expenses.

The coverage amounts are up to 10 million KRW for death and permanent disability, 100,000 KRW for heat-related illness diagnosis benefits, and up to 500,000 KRW per burn surgery. Coverage can be received concurrently regardless of other insurances.

To apply for insurance benefits, the insured or their family must submit a claim form and supporting documents to the relevant insurance company when an accident occurs.

For more details regarding the Resident Life Safety Insurance, inquiries can be made to the Safety General Division of Buk-gu Office.

Mayor Moon In of Buk-gu said, “I hope the Resident Life Safety Insurance will provide some help to residents whose livelihoods are threatened by unexpected accidents,” and added, “We will continue to promote various policies that consider the lives and safety of residents.”
