[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The International Bureau of Expositions (BIE) announced on the 4th (local time) that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has officially submitted a proposal to postpone the 'Dubai Expo 2020,' scheduled to be held this October, by one year.
In a statement released that day, BIE said, "Due to the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the UAE government proposed through an official letter to postpone the Dubai Expo by one year."
Originally, Dubai Expo 2020 was scheduled to be held from October 20 this year to April 10, 2021, but the UAE government is reported to have proposed holding it from October 1 next year to March 31, 2022.
BIE plans to hold an executive board meeting via video conference on the 21st of this month to discuss the UAE government's postponement proposal, and then decide by vote at the general assembly in June, where all 170 member countries will gather. For the postponement plan to be approved, more than two-thirds of the member countries must agree.
