Spring Season Arrival: Nationwide Maintenance of 110,000 km Roads Underway

[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] From the 6th until mid-next month, a nationwide spring road maintenance will be carried out on approximately 110,000 km of national and local roads.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the same day that starting from the 6th, maintenance and cleaning will be conducted on various road facilities and safety installations that have been stained or damaged due to winter snow removal operations and whose functions have deteriorated due to freeze-thaw cycles.

During this spring maintenance, based on the results of the thaw safety inspection previously conducted on major arterial roads, priority will be given to urgently needed repairs such as ▲road pavement repairs ▲reinforcement of rockfall-prone slopes ▲drainage facility maintenance ▲repair of safety facilities like guardrails ▲maintenance of damaged road signs. Road cleaning and illegal road occupation removal for landscape improvement under the theme of 'Creating Clean Roads' will also be carried out simultaneously.

In particular, as road traffic nationwide has decreased due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), maintenance will be performed to reduce public inconvenience caused by traffic congestion. Additionally, road maintenance budgets will be promptly executed within the first half of the year to stimulate economic revitalization and enhance economic activity.

Kim Yong-seok, Director of the Road Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "In preparation for the increase in road travel after COVID-19, we will devote efforts to spring road maintenance so that road users can enjoy roads comfortably and safely anytime and anywhere."
