[Asia Economy Reporter Son Sun-hee] President Moon Jae-in mourned on the 4th, saying, "It is a very tragic event that our medical staff, who were infected while treating patients with the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), have suffered their first casualty," and expressed "a deeply sorrowful and mournful heart." The late Heo Young-gu, who was treating COVID-19 patients in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongbuk, was infected himself and passed away on the morning of the 3rd while receiving treatment.
On the same day, President Moon wrote on his Facebook, "I wish the late, who was always strict with himself and kind to patients, a peaceful rest," and said, "The public surely shares the same feelings. I also offer my deepest condolences to the family." He especially reiterated his sympathy, saying, "The sorrow of not being able to stay by his side even at the moment of farewell due to self-quarantine is beyond words."
President Moon said, "Although we have welcomed the spring of April, I sincerely salute the medical staff who devote themselves without regard for their own health to overcome the still ongoing war against the infectious disease," and added, "I bow my head in gratitude to the medical staff in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, who are fighting day and night due to the large number of confirmed cases."
President Moon expressed his gratitude, saying, "Your passion to voluntarily rush to treatment, putting aside your own hospital work, is the strength that helps the local community overcome COVID-19," and "You all deserve everyone's respect."
President Moon said, "The world's evaluation of Korea as a 'model country for quarantine' was possible because of you," but also added, "On the other hand, I hope you take care of yourselves and watch over your own health. Do not lose courage, stay strong, and we will surely win."
