[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Residents of Dongdaemun-gu are continuing to participate in efforts to revitalize the local economy, which has been weakened by COVID-19.
This time, the neighborhood association leaders are stepping up.
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) announced that the neighborhood association leaders belonging to the Dongdaemun-gu Neighborhood Association Federation will participate in purchasing and using the ‘Dongdaemun-gu Love Gift Certificates’ to help local small business owners who are facing economic difficulties due to decreased sales caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
There are about 340 neighborhood association leaders in the Dongdaemun-gu Neighborhood Association Federation, and each leader plans to purchase at least 100,000 KRW worth of ‘Dongdaemun-gu Love Gift Certificates’ and use them at local small business establishments to help revive the stagnant local economy.
Additionally, about 500 part-time, fixed-term, and contract employees of Dongdaemun-gu will also participate by purchasing ‘Dongdaemun-gu Love Gift Certificates’ worth more than 200,000 KRW to help activate the local economy.
Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol of Dongdaemun-gu said, “I thank the neighborhood association leaders and employees who have stepped up to help the struggling local small business owners,” and added, “I hope more residents will join in the effort to thaw the frozen local economy.”
Earlier, Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol pledged to donate 30% of his monthly salary for four months. Separately, Deputy Mayor Choi Hong-yeon and senior officials at grade 4 (directors), grade 5 (department heads and district chiefs), and grade 6 (team leaders) collected about 43 million KRW by the 3rd to help local residents.
Furthermore, about 1,000 officials below grade 6 will purchase and use ‘Dongdaemun-gu Love Gift Certificates’ worth more than 200,000 KRW each to help alleviate the economic difficulties of local small business owners.
Along with this, donations and contributions from Dongdaemun-gu residents to support overcoming COVID-19 continue.
Sixteen organizations and companies, including the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Seoul Bookstore Cooperative, Earth Environment Group, the Union of Public, Private, and Home Daycare Centers, Dongan Church, and Dongdaemun-gu Sports Council, as well as eight residents, donated a total of about 70 million KRW to help neighbors in need.
Many organizations and companies such as the Dongdaemun-gu Korean Medicine Association, Seoul Nursing Association, Korail Metropolitan Eastern Headquarters, Korea Racing Authority, JK International, local professional groups and small business owners, and domestic sister cities have also donated quarantine supplies such as masks and hand sanitizers, as well as rice cakes, beverages, and fruits, supporting vulnerable residents and encouraging the busy Dongdaemun-gu Office staff engaged in quarantine work.
That is not all.
Many residents are also participating in the actively promoted ‘Good Rent Reduction Relay Campaign’ to share the economic difficulties of small business owners.
Gyeongdong Market reduced rent by a total of 270 million KRW over three months for 748 tenant stores, and Dongseo Market reduced rent by about 60 million KRW over three months for 55 tenant stores.
