[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Seo Dong-yong, the Democratic Party candidate for Suncheon-Gwangyang-Gokseong-Gurye (Eul), called for the revision of the Jeju 4.3 Special Act and the enactment of the Yeosu-Suncheon Special Act on the 72nd anniversary of Jeju 4.3 on the 3rd.
Candidate Seo Dong-yong stated, "Today marks the 72nd anniversary of Jeju 4.3. The Jeju 4.3 Special Act was enacted in 1999 during the Kim Dae-jung administration, and in 2003, a fact-finding report was adopted, along with an official apology from President Roh Moo-hyun. However, the amendment bill to the Special Act, which includes compensation for victims and bereaved families, nullification of illegal trials, and the establishment of a 4.3 Trauma Healing Center, has been pending in the National Assembly for over two years," urging the revision of the Special Act.
He continued, "The Yeosu-Suncheon Incident is an inseparable part of modern Korean history along with Jeju 4.3, especially the pain of our eastern Jeollanam-do region. After 72 years, not only the surviving victims of Jeju 4.3 and the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident but also their bereaved families are aging and passing away one by one. Before it is too late, we must promptly restore their honor and relieve their grievances," strongly expressing his intention and will for the enactment of the Yeosu-Suncheon Special Act.
Meanwhile, Seo Dong-yong, who participated in the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident retrial countermeasures committee and directly argued in the retrial of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, presented the enactment of the Yeosu-Suncheon Special Act as a key pledge.
