[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] A man in his 20s, who was arrested on assault charges, was prosecuted in custody for temporarily closing a police substation by pretending to be a COVID-19 patient.

The Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Hyung-joo) announced on the 3rd that A (23) was prosecuted in custody on charges of obstructing police officers' duties by deception (obstruction of official duties by deception, etc.) for temporarily closing a police substation by pretending to be a COVID-19 patient.

A was urgently arrested and taken to Wangjo Police Substation on the morning of the 17th of last month around 11 a.m. on charges of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and forcibly dragging her around the Jorye-dong area of Suncheon City.

It is known that the arrested A deceived the police substation into temporarily closing by pretending to be a COVID-19 self-quarantine subject.

The police immediately requested a COVID-19 test for A, and around 9 p.m., he was confirmed negative and all returned to work.

Due to A's false statement, the Wangjo Police Substation was closed for 9 hours from noon to 9 p.m. that day, and 14 police officers were self-quarantined.

Earlier, in February, A was summoned by the police on suspicion of night-time breaking and entering theft for secretly entering a large hospital ward in Suncheon and stealing wallets from inpatients, but he refused to appear by pretending to be a self-quarantine subject.
