[Asia Economy Golf Specialist Reporter Kim Hyun-jun] ○…World No. 136 Callum Hill (Scotland, photo) made headlines by winning on the Outlaw (mini) Tour...
Hill won the Berado Founders Cup held at Berado Golf Course in Buckeye, Arizona, USA, on the 2nd (Korean time), earning $4,500 (5.53 million KRW). The fact that a top 100 ranked player competed in a mini tour is newsworthy. It's like an NBA player playing street basketball. Mini tours cover prize money and operating costs through players' entry fees. Hill’s net income was only $3,625 after deducting the $875 entry fee.
Hill secured his 2020 season card by finishing 2nd on the European Tour Challenge (2nd tier) Tour money list last year. Although still a rookie, his world ranking is already similar to that of PGA Tour member Kim Si-woo (29, CJ Logistics, 134th). He came to Arizona, where his girlfriend lives, and with the European Tour completely suspended due to the recent spread of COVID-19, he decided to try out the Outlaw Tour for practice.
It is interesting that the mini tours, including the women's Cactus Tour, are all thriving. The Cactus Tour especially drew more spotlight as LPGA Tour stars like Carlota Ciganda (Spain) and Anna Nordqvist (Sweden) won consecutively. Ciganda won the 7th event, and Nordqvist topped the 10th event. Sarah Burnham (USA) created a bittersweet scene by receiving a roll of toilet paper as a prize along with $2,800 (3.42 million KRW) right after winning the 11th event.
