Fraudulently Collected Approximately 1.5 Million Won from 9 Victims Nationwide
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Hampyeong Police Station in Jeonnam announced on the 1st that they arrested A (26) on the 30th of last month on charges of fraud for posting false advertisements online claiming to sell masks and taking money from victims.
A is accused of taking about 1.5 million won from nine victims by posting on an online secondhand trading site in early March that he was selling KF94 masks, exploiting the nationwide mask shortage caused by the spread of COVID-19.
Police investigations revealed that A did not actually possess any masks.
A police official urged, “When trading secondhand goods online or conducting person-to-person transactions, please be especially cautious to avoid damage by checking whether the other party’s account number or phone number has been used in fraud through the ‘CyberCop’ app produced by the National Police Agency or fraud information sites, and by using safe transaction sites for non-face-to-face personal transactions online.”
