[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Onyu] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Russia increased by more than 400 in one day, bringing the total number of cases to over 2,700.

According to TASS news agency and others, on the 1st (local time), the Russian government's COVID-19 Import and Spread Prevention Headquarters announced, "440 additional confirmed cases were reported in 35 regions including the capital Moscow in one day," and "the total cumulative confirmed cases have risen to 2,777."

In particular, 267 additional confirmed cases were reported in Moscow alone. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in Moscow to 1,880. The second-largest city, Sankt Peterburg, reported 27 new cases, and the Moscow Oblast outside Moscow reported 15 new confirmed cases.

According to the headquarters, about half of the new confirmed cases are young and middle-aged people under 45 years old. Among the new confirmed cases in Moscow, 29 children were also included.

The number of deaths due to COVID-19 also increased by 7, including 5 in Moscow and 1 in Moscow Oblast, bringing the total to 24.

The city of Moscow, where confirmed cases are concentrated, has been enforcing a de facto mandatory self-quarantine for all residents since the 30th of last month, and many other local governments have taken similar measures. This is interpreted as a preemptive measure to minimize contact between residents and block the regional spread of the epidemic.

Russia has already closed all land, sea, and air borders, and international flights are only operating limited charter flights to transport its citizens staying abroad.

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency is also strictly limiting the daily number of arrivals at airports within the country. Sheremetyevo International Airport, the only airport in Moscow where passenger planes arrive, has set the number of arrivals to fewer than 500 people per day, and arrivals at airports in other cities are reportedly limited to fewer than 200 people per day.

In the case of Sheremetyevo Airport, among the international terminals C, D, and F that have been operating, only Terminal F, which is equipped with quarantine facilities, is maintained, while Terminals C and D have been temporarily closed.
