[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] Until the end of May, there will be no need to worry about data usage or charges when using educational platforms such as e-Hakseupteo and EBS.

On the 1st, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye and Minister of Science and ICT Choi Ki-young held a meeting at the Government Seoul Office and announced that they will actively cooperate to provide necessary support for establishing a remote education environment.

The Ministry of Science and ICT, in consultation with the Ministry of Education and the three major telecom companies, will support free and unrestricted access to major educational sites including EBS via smartphones without concerns about data usage or charges. Currently, there is no data consumption when using digital textbooks, e-Hakseupteo, Science All, Entry, Career Net, etc., and starting from the 9th, users can access EBS educational sites and watch content for free. However, this applies only when using the EBS site itself and does not cover EBS content accessed through other platforms such as YouTube channels or Naver TV.

IPTV will provide new broadcast channels to allow real-time viewing of grade-specific educational content without additional charges. Elementary school grades 1 to 2 can watch on the EBS Plus 2 channel, and the new channels will be provided using available channels: KT in the 300 range, SKB in the 750 range, and LGU+ in the 260 range.

Additionally, to lend smart devices to children from low-income families, Samsung Electronics plans to sponsor 30,000 smartpads in cooperation with the National Disaster Relief Association, and LG Electronics will sponsor 6,000 smartpads. Through this, the Ministry of Education will collaborate with metropolitan and provincial offices of education to lend these devices free of charge to low-income students.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and telecom companies will promptly support new internet installations required under the Education Informatization Support Project, and each metropolitan and provincial office of education will cover internet communication fees from their own budgets.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Education will allow access to commercial sites for remote classes at schools, enable the use of routers (WiFi) within classrooms, and simultaneously, together with each education office, ensure that necessary equipment for teachers conducting remote classes can be supported immediately.
