[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Inha University has joined hands with the local community to create Incheon as a city spreading artificial intelligence (AI).
On the 1st, Inha University announced that it will unite efforts with five city institutions including Incheon City, Incheon International Airport Corporation, Incheon Port Authority, Incheon Namdong Smart Industrial Complex Project Group, and Incheon Industry-Academia Convergence Center, as well as 15 companies such as Korean Air, Yujin Robot, and Incheon Smart City, to be selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT's '2020 AI Convergence Research Center Support Project.'
The AI Convergence Research Center is a central institution for research and educational activities that fuse AI technology into Incheon's specialized industries: manufacturing, logistics, and portal (airport and port) industries. Its foundation includes Inha University's Graduate School of Manufacturing Innovation, Graduate School of Logistics, Incheon International Airport, and Incheon Port.
Additionally, in September this year, Inha University will open the 'AI Major' in the general graduate school and the 'AI Convergence Major' in the graduate school of engineering to lead the cultivation of AI experts. The total enrollment is 80 students. The general graduate school will train advanced experts in AI convergence fields, while the graduate school of engineering will provide education for current workers in related fields to enhance the expertise of local industry workers.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will select four universities to establish AI Convergence Research Centers next month and support them with over 4.1 billion KRW for personnel training and R&D expenses over three years. Additional extensions are possible depending on performance.
Inha University has been actively operating the ABBI Convergence Research Group since April last year, where researchers in AI, blockchain, big data, and the Internet of Things collaborate. Among them, the AI Convergence Center is led by Professor Park In-gyu of the Department of Information and Communication Engineering, who is the overall person in charge of this project support, with about 30 professors from various fields participating.
Jo Myung-woo, President of Inha University, said, "We already have the capability to serve as a focal point for AI research and education through the establishment of the ABBI research group," and added, "Inha University will put all its strength into working together so that Incheon's industries can take a leap forward through the spread of AI and open a new era."
