[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Seung-ro, the mayor of Seongbuk-gu, received a plaque of appreciation from the National Fire Agency (Commissioner Jeong Mun-ho).

Starting April 1, all firefighters nationwide have been converted to national government employees, and this plaque expresses gratitude for Mayor Lee Seung-ro's various efforts to improve their working conditions and treatment.

Since his time as a Seoul City Council member, Mayor Lee has consistently emphasized the need to improve the treatment of firefighters who have been exposed to high risks, stress, and poor working environments, as well as the necessity of their conversion to national government status.

He proposed and initiated the 'New Fire Go Challenge,' raising awareness about the firefighters' transition to national government employees, and urged proactive and leading support at the Seoul city level through questions directed to the Seoul mayor.

After being elected as the mayor of Seongbuk-gu in the 7th local election, he strengthened the push for the passage of legislation for the nationalization of firefighters through communication with residents and various stakeholders.

Due to Mayor Lee's efforts, communication and cooperation between administration and fire services have been evaluated as smoother compared to other regions.

Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu, who received the plaque of appreciation, said, “I sincerely congratulate the long-awaited transition of firefighters to national government employees,” and added, “As the district and fire station have cooperated swiftly and closely in responding to various past disasters and the recent COVID-19, protecting the health and safety of 450,000 Seongbuk residents, I hope you will continue to serve as a strong pillar of support.”
