[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Apple has acquired the representative weather forecast application 'Dark Sky'. The Android version is scheduled to be discontinued starting July.
Dark Sky announced this acquisition news through its website on the 31st (local time). The company stated, "Our goal is to provide the best weather information to the world," adding "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to reach more people with greater impact than we could alone." The acquisition price was not disclosed.
Dark Sky is a paid weather app praised for its minute-by-minute weather forecasts, such as sending push alerts in advance if rain is expected within 10 minutes at the user's location. The purchase price of the paid app is $3.99.
With Apple acquiring Dark Sky, the Android service will be discontinued soon. The iOS app will continue to be provided as before. Dark Sky explained, "Android users will no longer be able to download the app," and "The Android service will remain active until July 1st, after which it will be terminated." During this period, refunds will be processed for paid subscribers of the Android version.
An Apple spokesperson confirmed the acquisition to CNBC but did not disclose specific details. Major foreign media expect that this acquisition will further enhance the weather forecast features on Apple iPhones.
