Gyeonggi-do's 'Big 4' Disaster Relief Income Diverge... Goyang, Seongnam, Yongin 'Distribute' vs Suwon 'Not Sure'

Gyeonggi-do's 'Big 4' Disaster Relief Income Diverge... Goyang, Seongnam, Yongin 'Distribute' vs Suwon 'Not Sure'

[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Among the 'Big 4' cities in Gyeonggi Province, Goyang, Yongin, and Seongnam, excluding Suwon, have decided to provide disaster relief income to citizens using their own funds.

In particular, Seongnam City abandoned its initial plan to selectively support only households with median income below 100% and decided to give 100,000 KRW each to all 940,000 citizens.

On the 31st, Eun Soo-mi, mayor of Seongnam, shared the good news on Facebook, saying, "In April, Seongnam citizens will receive an additional 100,000 KRW as 'Disaster Solidarity Safety Fund'.

Mayor Eun explained, "Regardless of income or age, about 940,000 people are eligible," adding, "This is an additional payment separate from the 100,000 KRW Gyeonggi Province disaster basic income."

She further stated, "On the 23rd, I announced the Seongnam-type Solidarity Safety Fund support project, planning to provide 67.3 billion KRW in disaster solidarity safety funds to 160,000 households with median income below 100%. However, in the spirit of combining universal welfare and targeted support, and based on the judgment that no one should be left out in the COVID-19 emergency disaster situation, we decided to expand the payment target to all citizens."

Accordingly, Seongnam citizens will receive 200,000 KRW per person, consisting of 100,000 KRW from Seongnam City and 100,000 KRW from Gyeonggi Province, regardless of income or age, amounting to a total of 800,000 KRW for a family of four.

The city plans to distribute the funds as prepaid Seongnam Love Gift Certificates after simple identity verification through online applications on the Seongnam City Hall website and on-site applications at local administrative welfare centers next month.

Previously, Yongin City planned to provide emergency living stabilization funds ranging from 300,000 to 500,000 KRW per household to 109,000 households with median income below 100%, and Goyang City planned to provide disaster basic income of 100,000 to 120,000 KRW per person to 850,000 people in the bottom 80% income bracket.

In contrast, Suwon City, the largest basic local government among the 'Big 4' with a population of 1.35 million, has not yet announced whether it will provide disaster relief income using its own funds.
