[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Violinists Kim Dong-hyun (21) and Park Kyu-min (24) will each hold audience-free solo recitals at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei on April 9 and April 23, respectively, with live performances broadcasted through Naver V LIVE's 'Kumho Art Hall Channel,' Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation announced on the 31st.
Kim Dong-hyun will perform as part of the '2020 Kumho Rising Star Series,' and Park Kyu-min will appear in the 'Kumho Instrument Series.'
Since 2004, Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation has selected 'Kumho Rising Stars' every early year and introduced stages of young musicians representing Korea. This year's Kumho Rising Stars include violist Kim Gyu-ri, flutist Kim Yu-bin, pianist Lee Hyuk, and violinist Kim Dong-hyun.
Kim Dong-hyun is a next-generation figure to watch, having won the bronze medal at last year's Tchaikovsky Competition.
He debuted in 2012 with the Kumho Young Artist Concert and has steadily grown through stages such as the Kumho Young Artist Concert and Kumho Instrument Series at Kumho Art Hall. Since 2016, he has been selected as a user of the Kumho Instrument Bank of Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation and performs with the 1763 'Johannes Baptista Guadagnini Parma' violin. Kim Dong-hyun has consistently achieved remarkable results in major competitions, including winning the 2015 Young Tchaikovsky Competition, 2nd place at the 2016 George Enescu International Music Competition, and winning the violin category at the 2018 Seoul International Music Competition.
In the first half of his recital, Kim Dong-hyun will perform Leclerc's 'Violin Sonata in D major' and Stravinsky's 'Divertimento,' and in the second half, he will play Faur?'s 'Violin Sonata No. 1' and Saint-Sa?ns' 'Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso' together with pianist Park Young-sung.
Since 1993, Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation has operated the 'Kumho Instrument Bank,' lending the foundation's antique instruments free of charge to promising young musicians. String instruments such as violins and cellos significantly affect the quality of performance depending on the instrument's level, so securing and using a good instrument is crucial for performers. The Kumho Instrument Bank is a system that supports young musicians to focus solely on their performance without worrying about instruments that can be worth tens of billions of won. Many talented young musicians, including the late violinist Kwon Hyuk-joo, Clara Jumi Kang, Lim Ji-young, and Kim Bom-sori, have received support from the 'Kumho Instrument Bank.'
Park Kyu-min has been selected as the new lessee of the Kumho Instrument Bank's violin 'Dominicus Montagnana' and will hold a solo recital on the 23rd.
Park Kyu-min debuted in 2012 with the Kumho Young Artist Concert, placed 3rd at the 2017 Irving Klein International Competition, 2nd at the 2018 Harbin International Music Competition, and in 2019, won 2nd place at the New York Young Concert Artists Competition and 2nd place without a 1st prize at the Berlin Max Rostal Violin Competition.
In the first half of his recital, he will perform Brahms' 'Violin Sonata No. 2 in A major' and Bach's 'Partita No. 1 for Solo Violin,' and in the second half, he will play Hindemith's 'Sonata for Solo Violin' and Strauss' 'Violin Sonata' together with pianist Moon Jae-won.
