Late Regret(?) of the US CDC That Said No Mask Needed If Healthy

Reviewing Guideline Change to 'Wear Masks Even If Homemade'
"Covering Your Face Reduces Infection Risk"
Medical Masks Still in Short Supply, Usage Restricted

[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] There are reports that the guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which currently state that masks are not necessary unless you are sick or caring for someone who is sick, may change. The CDC is reportedly considering recommending that citizens wear masks to prevent infection from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

On the 30th (local time), The Washington Post (WP), citing government officials, reported that the CDC may revise its guidelines. The current CDC guideline states that healthy individuals do not need to wear masks. The guideline under review would encourage people to cover their faces with homemade masks. This is because infected individuals wearing cloth masks can help block transmission.

However, the discussed guidelines advise against the use of medical masks such as N95 respirators. These masks should be reserved exclusively for healthcare workers who are facing supply shortages.

U.S. President Donald Trump also hinted at the possibility of revising the existing policy regarding mask use by the general public. During the task force (TF) regular press briefing that day, he stated, "It is something that can be discussed."

Among U.S. experts, there have been recent calls for wearing masks in public places or crowded areas. Even homemade cloth masks can reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Thomas Inglesby, director of Johns Hopkins University, said, "(Citizens wearing masks in public places) is a wise way to reduce the possibility of infection," adding, "It can help prevent infections caused by asymptomatic carriers."
