Yongin Light Rail Operates Normally on 31st Despite Union Strike Yongin Light Rail Transit

[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The Yongin Light Rail Transit (LRT) union went on strike on the 31st. However, the trains are operating normally.

Gyeonggi Yongin City announced that although the Yongin LRT union launched a full strike starting at 4 a.m. on the day, the trains are running normally.

Yongin City is utilizing the unmanned operation feature of the LRT by deploying emergency personnel, including non-union members and substitute workers, to operate the LRT without disruption regardless of the strike.

The city had previously set up an emergency operation control room on the 30th to minimize inconvenience to citizens and is maintaining close cooperation with related organizations.

Out of the total 187 employees of Yongin LRT, 143 are union members.

The Yongin LRT labor and management have held 41 collective bargaining sessions since February last year but have failed to narrow their differences. Accordingly, the union had announced a full strike for December 30-31 last year but later withdrew it. Since then, they have carried out three partial strikes this year on January 14, 17, and the 26th of this month.

A city official said, "Despite the union's strike, the LRT will operate without disruption," and promised, "As all citizens are going through a difficult time due to COVID-19, labor and management will work together to provide high-quality services to the citizens."
