[Asia Economy Reporter Noo Rae] ○…The 'former golf emperor' Jack Nicklaus (USA, photo) has taken action to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
On the 31st (Korean time), ESPN USA reported, "More than 115 athletes and coaches from 13 countries are participating in a fundraising auction to overcome COVID-19," adding, "Participants include Nicklaus, Michael Phelps, Stephen Curry, Simone Biles (all from the USA), and David Ortiz (Dominican Republic)." Nicklaus's hat and golf gloves, Phelps's swimsuit, and Curry's uniform are among the auction items.
The event is named 'Athletes for Relief.' It runs until May 1 and has already raised over $63,000 (76 million KRW). Anyone who donates more than $25 qualifies to bid on desired items, and winners are selected by lottery to receive the items. Nicklaus is a 'living legend' who holds the record for the most major wins in global golf history (18 wins) and a total of 73 wins on the PGA Tour.
He swept the four major championships?the 1962 US Open, the 1963 Masters and PGA Championship, and the 1966 The Open?becoming the fourth 'career grand slammer' at the young age of 26. Remarkably, he achieved the 'career grand slam' three times by winning each of the four majors at least three times. He won six times at the Masters alone. Since retiring, he has earned income comparable to his active career through various businesses such as golf course design.
