'Work by Day, Democracy Movement by Night' Mr. Gi Nam-yong Named April's Democracy Merit Recipient

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] The National 5·18 Democratic Cemetery Management Office (Director An Jin-hyung) announced on the 31st that the late Ki Nam-yong has been selected as the May 5·18 Democratic Merit Recipient.

Mr. Ki was born on April 27, 1958, and during the May 18 Democratic Movement, he was the head of a household who operated a clothing store during the day and participated in pro-democracy protests at night.

On May 21, 1980, while riding in a civilian army vehicle heading to the protest site at the Jeonnam Provincial Office, he was shot in the ankle by martial law troops' indiscriminate gunfire, fell, and was severely beaten to death.

An official from the National 5·18 Democratic Cemetery Management Office stated, “The late Ki Nam-yong rests in Section 1, Grave 1-11. Anyone visiting the 5·18 Democratic Cemetery can check his grave and his contributions. The National 5·18 Democratic Cemetery is a national cemetery open to all citizens, and we will continue to work hard to honor and remember those who sacrificed for our country's democracy.”

Meanwhile, to reexamine the noble sacrifices and contributions of the 5·18 Democratic Merit Recipients and to promote the value of the May 18 Democratic Movement both domestically and internationally, a Democratic Merit Recipient of the Month is selected every month.
