86-Year-Old Dies While Receiving Treatment in Paris
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] Princess Maria Teresa de Bourbon Parma, a distant cousin of King Felipe VI of Spain, has died from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). She is the first member of a royal family worldwide to die from COVID-19.
According to French and Spanish media, including the French weekly Paris Match, on the 30th (local time), Princess Maria Teresa, aged 86 this year, was diagnosed with COVID-19 and passed away on the afternoon of the 26th while battling the illness in Paris, France.
Princess Maria Teresa was the daughter of Duke Fran?ois-Xavier de Bourbon Parma, who once challenged the Spanish throne as a successor of the Spanish Carlos line, and Duchess Madeleine de Bourbon Busset. She was a distant cousin of the current King Felipe VI.
Born in Paris in 1933, Princess Maria Teresa was educated entirely in France, graduating from the University of Paris (Sorbonne). She held two doctoral degrees from Sorbonne and Complutense University of Madrid. Having remained single throughout her life, she identified herself as a Christian leftist and an autonomous socialist, frequently expressing her views on social issues, earning her the nickname "Red Princess" within the Spanish royal family.
Meanwhile, in Europe, Prince Charles of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert II of Monaco have previously tested positive for COVID-19.
