Gwangju City Election Commission Reports 4 Volunteers for Illegal Election Campaigning

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan City Election Commission announced on the 30th that it has filed charges against four volunteer workers from a preliminary candidate's election campaign for illegal primary election activities using phone calls during the primary election process (violation of the Public Official Election Act).

They are accused of appealing for support for a preliminary candidate by making phone calls to many party members and constituents ahead of the party's internal primary telephone opinion poll from last month to early this month.

Article 57-3(1) (Internal Primary Election Campaign) of the Public Official Election Act stipulates that in internal primaries conducted by parties granting voting rights to party members and non-members, primary election campaigning by direct phone calls is prohibited.

A Gwangju Election Commission official stated, "We plan to thoroughly investigate violations of the Public Official Election Act and take strict measures to ensure that this National Assembly election is conducted fairly within the bounds of the law."
