Under the Prime Minister's Office, a comprehensive government-wide 'Digital Sex Crime Eradication Plan' to be established
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] President Moon Jae-in and Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun held their weekly meeting after about a month to review the COVID-19 quarantine situation and discuss measures to support the livelihood economy. They also discussed measures to eradicate digital sex crimes in relation to the recent public outrage over the 'Nth Room case.'
The Prime Minister's Office announced on the 30th that Prime Minister Chung held a weekly meeting with President Moon.
First, Prime Minister Chung reported on the domestic and international COVID-19 outbreak situation, along with related issues such as high-intensity social distancing, the reopening of kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools, responses to overseas inflows, and mask supply.
In response, President Moon noted that although the increase in confirmed cases is slowing and the total number of recovered patients has surpassed those currently undergoing treatment, indicating that the situation is gradually stabilizing, the risk of overseas inflows and sporadic group infections remains. Therefore, he urged the cabinet to maintain vigilance and leave no gaps in quarantine measures.
He also emphasized that for the mandatory 14-day quarantine for all entrants, effective from midnight on April 1, to be effective on the ground, strict compliance with quarantine rules is essential and requested the development of practical measures to ensure this.
In particular, President Moon and Prime Minister Chung shared the view that the economic damage caused by COVID-19 is more severe than initially expected, and agreed to promptly proceed with the second supplementary budget for emergency disaster relief payments, as well as livelihood support measures such as reductions in social insurance premiums and electricity charges.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Chung also exchanged opinions with President Moon on measures to eradicate digital sex crimes in relation to the recent public outrage over the Nth Room case.
President Moon emphasized that this case is a "cruel and anti-human crime that destroys a person's life," and stated that the government takes the public demand to eradicate digital sex crimes seriously, urging thorough investigations of perpetrators and ensuring no neglect in supporting victims.
He further requested that, to prevent the public from suffering from similar incidents again, a task force (TF) be formed centered on the Prime Minister's Office, involving related ministries as well as private experts, to promptly prepare comprehensive measures to eradicate digital sex crimes.
