[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 30th that it will welcome the opening of ‘Jeonil Building 245’ and operate the 5·18 Democracy Square fountain early from next month as part of efforts to reduce fine dust.
The 5·18 Democracy Square fountain, with a diameter of 19.3m, a height of 2.32m, and a capacity of 214 tons, is operated using 14 motor pumps. About 180 underwater lights harmonize with landscaping trees such as yew and fennel trees, expected to provide fresh sights to citizens weary from COVID-19.
The operating period is from next month until October, from 10 a.m. to 9:40 p.m. During the day, it operates 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off, and at night, 40 minutes on and 20 minutes off. However, operation will be flexible depending on weather and events at the square.
Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “With the opening of ‘Jeonil Building 245,’ a symbolic building of the Gwangju Democratization Movement, we hope citizens visiting the 5·18 Square can feel the vibrant urban atmosphere. As many citizens are exhausted due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we hope they can take a brief rest through the fountain’s flowing water.”
